Theatre in Education - Reflection
1. Global Context -
Describe how your planning and final ideas reflect the global context and statement of inquiry:
My final issue links with the statement of inquiry, - Art, through its expression and structure, can communicate areas for social change in the world - because depression is a serious social issue that affects many people of many different ages. My planning also links to the global context because it includes different ways of expression.
Do you have a better understanding of the global context?
Yes, I have a better understanding of the global context. I now understand that drama can aid in development of society to make it more fair. For example, Bertolt Brecht used to put on plays about politics, which helped shape peoples' views on it.
2. Knowing and Understanding (A)
What research did you do in your own time?
I completed a lot of research about Bertolt Brecht and his alienation technique. He was a German theatre practitioner, poet, and play writer. He was also part of the German army medical staff during WWI. His alienation technique was a way of reminding the audience that they are still watching a rehearsed play performed by people in real time by breaking the illusion. He did this by telling his actors to break character and sing, talk to the audience, dance, etc.
What challenges did you face?
I think the main challenge I faced was how to make my video without being disrespectful. I chose to do my project about depression, a mental illness which is fairly common but has upsetting and horrible affects. Depression changes a person from the inside out, affecting their mood, personality, weight, etc. This is why I had to be careful as to not be disrespectful and not to spread false information and lies.
Which forms of media did you use to enhance your work?
I used social media and broadcast media to find more information about depression and its effects on people.
3. Skills Application
Identify the skills you needed and use to complete your work.
As I did a video for my final project, I used editing, sound, and sub-titles.
What were your strengths?
My strength was definitely editing. I have done many video and podcast projects in the past, in-school and out of school, and editing has always been my favourite part.
What would you like to improve on and why?
I would like to improve my acting skills. Because I was talking about such a sensitive topic, I had to make sure that I wasn't exaggerating or under-exaggerating and I found that difficult to do. I had to keep re-filming parts because I was not happy with how I had acted,
4. Thinking Creatively and Responding
How did you demonstrate creativity and imagination?
I demonstrated creativity by making my final product a mix of a mime and a regular acting video. I used sub-titles and music to help the audience understand what was going on, while still using my face to act out the scene.
How do you think your content, ideas and execution could impact the world?
I think my video can help spread awareness about signs that people can look out for in friends, family, classmates, etc. to help them and make them feel less alone.
What skills could you transfer from other school subjects or life in general?
As I improved my editing skills with this project, I will be using them to complete other projects in subjects such as English, where I am currently creating a podcast.
